Young Drivers in NI

May 20, 2010

If you are a young driver in Northern Ireland chances are you are going to be paying a lot for your first year of Car Insurance.  Policies for 17 – 18 year olds can run into the thousands, even more than the price of your car

So what should young drivers do to get a great deal on their first policy?  It doesn’t matter what age you are you should shop around for car insurance and get as many quotes as possible. There are several specialists in the market that offer quotes to teenage drivers.

When searching for cheap car insurance in Northern Ireland you should think about the value of the car itself. There isn’t much point in paying for fully comprehensive cover if the vehicle is only worth a few hundred pounds. New drivers may be better off with third party only or third party fire and theft cover.

We have listed some tips that can reduce your insurance premium:

•The car itself – You should buy a compact car with no modifications as high-performance cars mean high premiums.

•Think security – Parking in a garage at night will help reduce your premium.  If possible you should try to fit a car alarm and immobiliser.

•Taking a Pass Plus course – As soon as you complete your test you should take a Pass Plus course.  Insurance companies recognise these courses and will adjust your premium accordingly.  These courses can cost over £100 but chances are, you will save more than that on your insurance premium.

After your first year as a fully insured driver you will start to see your premiums fall as long as you drive safely and build a no-claims discount.  Many Insurance companies in Northern Ireland rapid bonus schemes to young drivers to earn a full year’s bonus in nine or 10 months.   If you have an existing policy please bear in mind that many insurers offer their best deals to new customers so don’t think that your current insurance company will remain the best value.
